Sen. Evan Bayh (IN) announced today that he will not seek re-election in what, many insiders say, would likely have been an easy contest due, in part, to the current atmosphere in Washington, DC.
Citing the divisive culture of both the Republican and Democratic parties and the failure of Congress to appropriately address the needs of the people instead of, largely, themselves and their parties, Sen. Bayh stated that "There is too much partisanship and not enough progress -- too much narrow ideology and not enough practical problem-solving...Even at a time of enormous challenge, the peoples' business is not being done."
We could not agree more with his comments, but feel that the senator's departure is regretable and will merely continue the downward spiral of quality of elected officials in our nation's capital.
Until the citizens of this country care more about actions and progress than which party is in control, and elect officials whom share their concerns, our nation will continue to be one led by a squabbling bunch of adults, who can only be defined as such by their age.
"So tonight, to you, the great silent majority of Americans, I ask for your support."
Richard M. Nixon, November 3, 1968
