CapitolWatch calls for immediate action on Illegal immigration
  • May 10, 2006

With the latest revelation that the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is informing Mexican officials as to the location of Minutemen, and other private border patrol groups, CapitolWatch is calling for immediate and visible action on stopping illegal immigration.

According to Steve Ralls, Executive Director of CapitolWatch, "Every day that we continue to allow this unchecked flow of illegal immigration, is another day the American taxpayer is suffering. The estimated $35 billion in tax revenue lost due to the illegal immigrant labor market is just the tip of the ice burg."

According to a study by the Center for Immigration Studies, Medicaid pays $2.8 billion annually for illegal immigrants and their U.S.-born children. Additionally the study shows that federal aid to K-12 public schools for the education of the children of illegal immigrants is $1.4 billion annually.

The total cost to state and local taxpayers for educating 3.5 million children of illegal immigrants is estimated at $28.6 billion, according to a Federation for American Immigration Reform study.

"Enough is enough, the federal government must put a stop to the essential freeway of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States," said Ralls. "We must redistribute law enforcement and domestic military where it is needed most, on the border, if that is what it takes. Whatever we do, it must be more than what is being proposed by Congress now." Currently Congress is considering legislation to deal with this growing problem in the United States. The Senate and House versions differ widely on several important issues to immigration reform, such as amnesty for current illegal immigrants, and increases in border security.
